Initial Sketches
This project involved the collaborative design of a modular rainwear system that responds to the needs of a modern commuter navigating Portland's unpredictable weather. Designed with our consumer profile in mind—Rain, a 28-year-old creative professional balancing work, social life, and content creation—the final concept offers adaptable protection while maintaining style, comfort, and personal expression.
My Role:
I was responsible for designing the mid-layer outfit, a central component of the system. This layer functions as a standalone everyday outfit—appropriate for work, commuting, and socializing—while also integrating smoothly with outer layers for added weather protection. I focused on comfort, versatility, and ease of movement to ensure it could transition across multiple settings throughout the day.
I worked closely with the designer of the bolero piece, maintaining frequent communication to ensure our layers worked together both functionally and visually. As a team, we prioritized cohesion across all four pieces, aligning on materials, color palette, and silhouette to create a unified system.
With my background in graphic design, I also contributed to the technical development of the project:
⦁Created detailed flat sketches in Adobe Illustrator to support the design process and showcase construction.
⦁Designed a final animated GIF demonstrating how the full modular system functions in real-world use, highlighting the seamless transitions between layers and activities.
Additional Components by Team Members:
⦁A compact, functional bolero that enhances outfit adaptability while adding a layer of warmth and style.
⦁An adjustable coat that shifts in shape and size to accommodate both weather changes and personal styling preferences, ideal for year-round Portland commuting.
⦁A stylish headwear piece designed to protect makeup and natural/protective hairstyles from rain, wind, and humidity.
Together, our team created a forward-thinking rainwear solution that balances aesthetic cohesion, modularity, and daily functionality—designed for a lifestyle that doesn’t pause for the weather.
